Braces in Randleman, NC
At Cobb Orthodontics, we take pride in providing high quality orthodontic care while maintaining a fun, friendly, and welcoming office environment. Our doctors and highly trained team of orthodontic specialists work hard to treat every patient on an individual basis, designing specialized treatment plans that perfectly suit each patient's unique orthodontic needs. While we can - and do - straighten teeth at every age, there's one age demographic that we see more than any other - and, as you might have guessed, it's teenagers.
While many teens receive orthodontic treatment only during adolescence, in some cases, we recommend two-phase treatment. This happens when a patient needs an early, interceptive treatment when they're still a child and their baby teeth haven't fallen out yet. This treatment may take the form of braces, headgear, or other appliances, and it often addresses issues like jaw size, tooth protrusion, and even facial symmetry.
Phase II treatment is closer to what most people think of when they hear the word orthodontic treatment. It consists of using braces, Invisalign, or another appliance to straighten the teeth and align the jaw, helping the patient achieve a healthy, beautiful smile that'll last them the rest of their life.
When to Begin Phase II Treatment
Generally, we'll perform Phase II treatment from ages 11 to 15. This time period is ideal because most or all of the permanent teeth have grown in already, so we can easily see what problems exist and work to correct them. Because we're working on the permanent teeth, these improvements, once made, will last the patient the rest of their life.
Another reason that adolescence is a great time for Phase II treatment is a social one. Braces have become so common that they're something of a rite of passage for teenagers, which makes it a lot easier to go through the treatment process. In fact, many patients tell us they want braces just so they can fit in with their friends! However, for those teens that want to fly under the radar and avoid metal braces, Invisalign is always a great alternative!
Finally, during adolescence, a patient's metabolism is in full swing - and we can take advantage of that. By harnessing the growth spurts a teenager naturally experiences, we can speed up tooth movement and cut treatment times overall.
While many patients only go through treatment in adolescence, in general, two phase treatment is most effective at producing lasting results. We'll talk with you about what's right for you or your child, and we'll use our expertise to design a treatment plan that makes sense for your budget and lifestyle.
