Your Greensboro, NC Orthodontist

At Cobb Orthodontics, our mission is to provide the highest quality orthodontic care to our patients in a fun, friendly office environment. Our doctors and highly trained team of orthodontic specialists work hard to get to know every patient individually, and we pride ourselves on crafting customized treatment plans to perfectly suit our patients' unique orthodontic needs. While a majority of our patients are adolescents or adults, for many patients, problems need to be addressed earlier on - and that's where early orthodontic treatment comes in.

When Should My Child Start Treatment?

While orthodontics can enhance a smile at any age, there is an optimal time for treatment. In keeping with the recommendation of the American Association of Orthodontists, we ask that your child first come to visit us either at the first sign of orthodontic problems or by age 7. While we may not begin treatment, an examination at this age lets us track and monitor your child's dental development, helping us to spot any possible problems before they develop and to plan the ideal time to begin treatment.

Why Should My Child Have an Evaluation?

Contrary to what some believe, orthodontic problems almost never get better with time - usually, they get worse. Starting examination early lets us spot and treatment problems before they grow in severity, helping to safeguard your child from major issues and ensure they develop a healthy, beautiful smile that will last them the rest of their lives.

Why Do You Screen at Age 7?

By this age, the back bite has established itself, which means we can evaluate both the front-to-back and the side-to-side relationships of the teeth. This lets us see any problems that may develop down the line and plan accordingly.

How Can Interceptive Treatment Help My Child?

While not right for everyone, when it is needed, interceptive treatment is one of the best ways to ensure a healthy smile. Some of the benefits include:

  • Creating room for overcrowded teeth
  • Influencing jaw growth to create facial symmetry
  • Preserving space needed for unerupted teeth
  • Shortening treatment times later on

What Can Orthodontics Treat?

Besides providing the aesthetic benefits of a beautiful smile, orthodontics also helps to correct bad bites, also called malocclusions. Malocclusions are caused by tooth or jaw misalignment, and can negatively impact the way you smile, speak, chew, and even how you sleep at night. They can also make it harder to maintain proper oral hygiene, cause uneven tooth wear, or lead to speech impediments. When you go through orthodontic treatment, you're not just creating a pretty smile - you're creating a healthier you.
